Chinese New Year lion dance parade Feb 9, 2008

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

February 9, 2008, Spadina - Dundas Street West, Toronto Chinatown,  Hong Luck Kung Fu Club and Chinatown Business Improvment Area (BIA) had a Lunar New Year lion dance parade.  The event started at 12:00 noon until 5:00 pm.  The lion went to every store / business establishment to bless the owner with good luck and wish them prosperity and wishes of a better business for the remaining of the year.

Weather wise, we were bless with a warm day as it was raining in the middle of February winter.  The year of the Golden Rat 2008 must be a good year ahead for us too.  So with the help of the dignataries from BIA, we awakened 2 lions as well.

Here are some pictures of the lion dance parade.

Enjoy!!!

Why are stances important in kung fu?

Monday, February 18th, 2008

Stance training is the most essential in any kung fu regimen.  Proper balance from stance is required to execute techniques in kung fu.

In the case of executing sow chui, a large looping roundhouse hook punch,  requires a strong balance of stances.  Sow chui is a technique which gathers a lot of energy during the swinging execution.  In addition, the power gathered from the whipping of the hip/waist gives the techniques a devastating blow to the target upon impact, similar to swinging a sledgehammer to break concrete blocks, mortar, etc.  If the balance of the person executing sow chui is not strong or rooted to the ground, the person will fall during execution.
